Industry activity in the tristate's public works sector may have begun to dry up (apart from Sandy-related projects), but one would not get that impression from a quick look at results from ENR New York’s latest specialty contractors survey.

Many of the top-50 firms that participated in the survey list transportation, energy and other non-building projects as their largest projects to break ground last year. Many other firms list education and health care facilities, and so it appears that some of the work that had kept the industry busy during the toughest times of the recession continues.

That is not necessarily in contrast to what industry executives have been telling ENR New York this year. They say that the private sector, particularly residential and commercial construction, is indeed picking up—which our survey results also show with several Manhattan tower projects ranking as the largest for some firms.

But executives also say that, while most of the public sector is slowing, there are pockets of activity in the region in sectors including roads and bridges; airports; and Sandy reconstruction.

Like last year, those that responded to our survey come from a diverse mix of specializations from soil and dredge treatment to interior finishes. Each one's revenues also differ widely with one firm generating about $800 million in the tristate region, and another a bit more than $60 million.

More details on these firms as well as their largest projects to break ground will be featured in ENR New York’s September issue. For now, here’s a quick glance in alphabetical order of the top-50 firms that made this year’s list:
