The votes are in and the Engineering News-Record regional editors have chosen Torcon, Inc. as this year's Top Contractor. Number 15 on the region's list of 65 contractors that responded to our annual survey, Torcon managed to keep its 2012 revenue fairly steady at $294 million in a tough market.

That is largely due to the firm's high-tech focus with projects including National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS) II, part of the U.S. Dept. of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, N.Y. Torcon served as the GC on the project's massive ring building under a $200-million contract, the single-largest contract in the NSLS-II construction projects, the DOE says. Torcon hired local subcontractors and suppliers for the project, which created more than 1,250 construction jobs, the agency adds.

The firm has also actively implemented a safety program based on OSHA's Voluntary Protection Programs, emphasizing education and cooperation.

With nearly 200 employees in the tristate region, the Red Bank, N.J., firm's Torcon Energy Services business unit designs, develops, manages, builds and operates sustainable energy solutions for both private and public facilities. The firm also works on a range of commercial construction projects, including offices, retail and hotel centers, and higher education facilities.
