Musical chairs could be the theme of this year’s ranking of the tristate’s top-50 contractors. That is because, although there are a few newcomers to the 2012 list, all but one firm that made last year’s ranking changed position this year. This includes the 10-largest players on the list, most of which also held a top-10 spot last year.

But perhaps the more intriguing story about this year’s ranking is that regional revenues increased over 2011 totals for those who responded to our survey. This year’s list shows that the largest firm generated more than $2 billion in revenue, while the smallest on the list reached nearly $60 million. That compares with revenue of nearly $2 billion at the largest firm last year and nearly $50 million for the smallest.

Like last year, we ranked the top-50 firms that participated in the survey. Not surprisingly, most of these firms list transportation or education projects as their largest projects that broke ground last year.

We’ll hold off on providing further details — including specific revenue for each firm on this year’s list — until our July 2nd issue. But here’s a quick look, in alphabetical order, of the top-50 contractors that participated in our 2012 survey.
