Edmonton, Alberta, was already expecting a shiny new arena for its NHL hockey team, but the planned arena district will also hold the city’s tallest building when construction on a new tower wraps sometime in 2018.

The multi-use tower will result in a 62-story, 735-ft building that will move 1,700 Stantec employees into the heart of downtown Edmonton. Of the 600,000 sq ft of commercial space, Stantec expects to lease 450,000.

The design of the tower includes roughly 30 floors of office space, the lower about 26 for Stantec, and 320 residential suites in the upper 30 floors. Stantec will not only serve as the building’s largest tenant, but also the designer of the project on the corner of 102 Street and 103 Avenue. “We are proud to have both our people and our designer’s work play a role in enhancing the vibrancy of the Edmonton Arena District,” says Bob Gomes, president and CEO of Stantec, in a media release.

Stantec will provide full architecture and engineering services for the tower, a project targeting LEED Gold certification. It will also serve as the project manager.

From an aesthetic point of view, Stantec says the design team will work to combine the structure and light to transmit the energy of the plaza upwards, creating a distinctive landmark for Edmonton’s skyline.

Construction on the new tower will start this fall, with completion expected for summer 2018.

Stantec is also serving as a sub-contractor on the neighboring new hockey arena, designed by 360 Architecture.
