The U.S. Chamber of Commerce wants to put climate-change science on trial and is calling on the nation’s chief environmental steward, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, to do the job.

Now, this is an idea whose time has come!

The requested hearing would be “the Scopes monkey trial of the 21st century,” say Chamber officials. “It would be evolution versus creationism,” adds William Kovacs, the chamber’s senior vice president for environment, technology and regulatory affairs.

Without a hint of irony, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the nation’s business lobby, has placed itself squarely in the camp of the faith-blinded know-nothings who will themselves to ignorance to deny evolution and cling to ancient myths for their understanding of the scientific facts of the physical world.

For its model of how to judge peer-reviewed science with its overwhelming evidence that Earth's climate is rapidly changing and that humans are mainly responsible, the chamber proudly points to what has become the laughingstock of all who recognize the difference between the knowledge of the heart based on faith and the knowledge of physical phenomena based on science.

At last, at long last, a leader of the desperate rear-guard defense against action to curb global warming, action that just might give us a chance to deliver to our grandchildren a planet with some resemblance to the one we inherited from our parents, has stepped forward to strip the mask of rationality off its opposition to the advance of legislation informed by science.

And if, as the chamber expects, EPA refuses to hold the requested hearings, why, the United States Chamber of Commerce will take the government to Federal court. Then, by golly, the facts will come out for all the world to see!

EPA says the threatened lawsuit would be “frivolous.” I say it would be edifying, and well worthwhile. Save me a seat.

Here comes the Judge!
