The really big win for the construction industry is to send all workers home safely every day. Safety Week 2015 is an excellent program every construction company can be part of that can help. It was off to a good start last year, and it is ramping up to have even more widespread participation this year. On the week staring May 4, contractors across the U.S. will pledge time every day to special programming on safety.

The activity is sponsored by two groups who are dedicated to an industry-wide safety transformation—The Construction Industry Safety Initiative and the Incident and Injury-free Executive Forum.

Charlie Bacon, CEO of Limbach, says the effort "gained OSHA's support this year. They moved their industry wide safety fall protection week from June to our week. We also have 24 industry associations sponsoring the week," he says. The groups include Associated General Contractors, the Associated Builders and Contractors, The Construction Industry Round Table and the Construction Users Roundtable. On the contractor side, we have 44 official sponsor firms and many others, who are not officially sponsoring, but are conducting and participating" in the week-long safety push, he says.

There will be a kickoff program at Related Cos. Hudson Yards project (33rd Street and 10th Ave.) in New York City on May 4 at 11 a.m. Bacon will be joined by executives from Gilbane, Skanska and Lend Lease.

Bacon says: The second annual industry safety week has "tremendous traction" across the nation.
