The Engineering News-Record editorial team came home with four prestigious awards from an American Business Media luncheon on March 27. ENR Deputy Editor Richard Korman won one of the association’s top honors, the Timothy White Award for editorial integrity.

In his acceptance speech, Korman said, “Over the years, ENR has been called the Bible and the conscience of the industry. Our investigations of individual surety guarantees continue a tradition of digging. But we don’t just bust bad guys or worship winners. We probe so that the industry can be free of corruption, free of unfair risk shifting and free of deadly jobsite accidents. We investigate because it inspires the trust of our audience.” Here is a link to our video of Korman’s full address.

In addition, ENR teams won three Jesse H. Neal Awards, considered the Pulitzers of business-to-business journalism. Our energy infrastructure series of cover stories on the new energy reality, by Andrew Wright, Pam Hunter, Tom Armistead, and Housley Carr with design by Richard Demler, won Best Subject-Related Series.

Three project features won the Best Technical Content Neal. Nadine Post wrote about the Atlanta Falcons’ stadium and its convertible roof, Aileen Cho wrote about the Hong Kong-Macau link, and Scott Blair wrote about an innovative water pipeline designed to soak up seismic motion. Luke Abaffy supported them with videos and Richard Demler designed the cover stories.

Team leader Scott Lewis organized ENR’s probe into cutting-edge engineering in our examination of “Dream Projects,” which won Best Subject-Related Package. The opening overview story by Debra Rubin was supported individual stories by  Tom Sawyer, Jeff Rubenstone, Peter Reina, Tom Armistead, Saibal Dasgupta and others with Richard Demler creating the design. Lewis drafted a panel of industry expert judges to rate how feasible these projects might be.

Neal judges look for editorial craftsmanship, journalistic enterprise and service to the industry—and that’s why it means a lot to us to win them.
