ENR California is pleased to announce the 2019 winners of the regional Legacy Awards, given to two individuals, one in Northern California and one in Southern California.

Each year, ENR’s Legacy Awards honors professionals who have contributed a substantial legacy of lifetime service to their colleagues and the A/E/C industry.

This year, Ron Hamburger will receive the Legacy Award for Northern California in San Francisco on Tuesday, Oct. 8. Craig Martin will receive the Southern California honor in Los Angeles on Thursday, Oct. 10. Event details for ENR California’s 2019 Regional Best Project Awards are here: San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Hamburger, senior principal at Simpson Gumpertz & Heger Inc. (SGH), is an internationally recognized expert in structural, earthquake, and blast engineering and has played key roles in developing national structural engineering standards and building code provisions. After the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in New York, Hamburger served as an investigator in the World Trade Center’s collapse on behalf of the ASCE’s Structural Engineering and FEMA.

Recently, Hamburger developed the repair scheme for San Francisco’s 645-ft-tall, tilting, sinking Millennium Tower.

Martin began his career after graduating with a civil engineering degree from the University of Kansas in 1972. Martin rose through the ranks of Jacobs, where he served as CEO. During his tenure, company grew its revenue from $1.16 billion to nearly $13 billion, joined the list of Fortune 500 companies, and increased its workforce by 50,000 employees.

Martin is a champion of improving safety. He has pushed for more analysis for prevention of injuries in construction.

In March, Martin and his wife, Diane, made a gift of $3.5 million to establish the Center for Construction Safety at KU’s School of Engineering.

Hamburger’s and Martin’s profiles will be published in ENR California’s January issue.
