Earning accolades this year as ENR California’s Owner of the Year is the Orange County Transportation Authority. A strong factor weighing in favor of OCTA’s selection is a project that will rank highly on the magazine’s upcoming Top Starts list: the $1.9-billion Interstate 405 Expansion.

Commenced in January 2018, the 16-mile-long construction effort, located between Costa Mesa and the Los Angeles County line, is among the largest highway projects currently under construction within the state of California. Funded in large part by a county half-cent sales tax for transportation enhancements, the sprawling project is intended to greatly reduce commute times by adding both regular lanes, as well as express lanes. As the graphic above illustrates, OCTA estimates that commute times will be reduced by more than 100 minutes.

The agency’s ongoing success delivering major projects is a result of that county funding measure, recently renamed as OC Go. According to OCTA, the OC Go Transportation Investment Plan program will deliver more than $13.1 billion in infrastructure upgrades by the year 2041.

ENR California will provide its readers with other insights about OCTA’s multi-faceted construction efforts in its April 2019 edition.
