As our April issue makes its way to your mailbox and this homepage this week, take a close look at our annual Top Contractors story and rankings. We had a great response this year, with 100 companies submitting surveys via our online link.As usual, once we receive the surveys, we compile the data and we rank the firms in descending order based on the amount of revenue in total in California and separately per category in the state.
In comparing the top 10 firms from 2009 (2008 data) and 2010 (2009 data), you can see that revenue dropped considerably all the way around. No surprise there.
A few firms managed to move up the rankings, though. For example, McCarthy Building Cos. came in fourth last year and moved up to number two this year; Turner moved from second to first; and DPR moved from seventh to fourth. The biggest jump within the top 20 was Hensel Phelps, number 12 last year and number five this year.
Lots of reasons for the fluctuations, all of them well known to all of you. As the economy slowly rebounds, however, investments start flowing again and project pipelines start to reassemble.
In California, hospitals, higher ed and major transportation projects are still moving along fairly steadily. In March alone, McCarthy, for example, started one project (the $10.3-million design-build parking structure at Scripps Memorial Hospital in Encinitas), completed another (the Sacramento Unified School District’s School of Engineering and Sciences) and topped out its megaproject (the $700-million Kaiser Permanente Fontana replacement hospital). McCarthy’s pipeline, at least last year and so far this year, is quite impressive.
