As we move closer to the premiere of ENR California in the Feb. 7 issue of Engineering News-Record, one of the stories we want to give a heads-up to is “Six Companies to Watch,” which takes a look at five A/E/C firms and one public entity and their contribution to the Golden State’s construction industry and economy. The featured firms have all performed well this past year and are showing strong gains as we move further into 2011.
In fact, just in the past week or so, two of the firms featured in contributor JT Long’s story announced some major-league project news:
Skanska, the contractor selection that is building an impressive pipeline of projects in California, says that it was awarded two healthcare projects totaling $282 million. The first is a $145-million contract to build a new clinic for the Palo Alto Medical Foundation in San Carlos. Construction will begin in the spring with completion in 2013. The other is a series of contracts totaling $137 million with a “confidential client” for a multiphase renovation and addition to a medical center in the San Francisco Bay Area. Construction will begin immediately with completion scheduled for March 2015.
And the public entity/owner being featured, the Orange County Transportation Authority, which has been a consistent employer the past few years with a string of Measure M-funded highway projects, says that funding for additional projects was just approved via the State Transportation Improvement Program and voter-approved Proposition 1B. Nearly $140 million will go toward a new lane on the Riverside Freeway (SR-91) between the Costa Mesa Freeway (SR-55) and Weir Canyon Road; construction of the Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center; and construction of the Kraemer Boulevard railroad grade separation. More funding is expected to arrive this year when voter-approved Measure M2 money gets circulated.
