Morgan State University, Maryland's largest historically black college or university, is the 2023 ENR MidAtlantic Owner of the Year, and will be featured in the April print issue of ENR MidAtlantic.  

The Owner of the Year is chosen by ENR editors for its innovation and creativity within the region as well as for its community contributions. Previous ENR MidAtlantic recipients include the West Virginia Dept. of Transportation, Boston Properties, Penn Med, Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission, DelDott, Douglas Development, PennDOT, DC Public Schools and DC Water. 

Founded in 1867, Baltimore-based Morgan State serves a 9,000-person multiethnic and multiracial student body, offering more than 140 academic degree programs and currently a Carnegie-classified high research (R2) institution that is on track to achieve R1 status.

Construction and maintenance work has been nonstop at the university since 2008 and has accelerated since the start of the pandemic. It has opened a 670-bed residential building with attached dining facility and now is building an adjacent 600-bed building  Also under way are a 150,000-sq-ft health and human services building under construction, a 20,000-sq-ft public safety building set to open soon and a 250,000-sq-ft science building now in design, with plans to tear down an aging building to allow for construction of a new one to house a school of osteopathic medicine, and to acquire from the city of Baltimore 59 acres near campus for further development.

Calvin and Tina Tyler Hall 

The $88-million facility serves as a gateway to the university's National Treasure campus and represents one of the campus's most celebrated architectural gems. It received more than 20 architectural design and construction awards and distinctions, including being named an ENR MidAtlantic Project of the Year Finalist in 2021. The 141,675-sq-ft, modern facility encompasses five stories; features an expansive, interconnected three-story lobby atrium; and was designed to achieve LEED Silver Certification for optimum energy and environmental efficiency. 

 Morgan Business Center – Home of the Earl G. Graves School of Business and Management 

Opened in 2015, the $72-million, six-story, modern complex is the location for Morgan State's School of Business and Management. Next to the Martin D. Jenkins Hall–Behavioral and Social Services Center, the Morgan Business Center anchors the university's west campus. The 135,000 sq ft facility is Gold LEED Certified and features a real-time capital markets stock trading center, innovation center, computer labs, classrooms, seminar rooms, an 80-person lecture hall and a 300-person auditorium. 

Martin D. Jenkins Hall – Behavioral and Social Sciences Center 

Jenkins Hall houes the Depts of Economics; History and Geography; Psychology; Sociology and Anthropology; and Political Science. Among many amenities featured in the $79-million,148,000-sq-ft facility are flexible classrooms for traditional lectures or group learning; collaborative open spaces for faculty and students; room placements that promote interdisciplinary learning; an instructional design development suite to support the continuing education of faculty; and a 170-seat auditorium. Completed in 2017, it is a Silver LEED-certified building.
