The August issue of ENR MidAtlantic will feature the top-ranked general contractors based on 2015 revenue. With the 53 participating firms from Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia reporting a total of $17.42 billion of revenue in the region during 2015, there’s no doubt that it has been a good year. But only one firm can be honored as the MidAtlantic’s Top Contractor of the Year.

That distinction goes to James G. Davis Construction Corporation.

Headquartered in Rockville, Md., the firm jumped from No. 9 on the 2015 Top Contractor rankings for the region with $569.34 million in revenue to No. 5 on this year’s chart with $869.32 million in revenue. That astounding 45% bump was also good enough to move DAVIS to No. 83 on ENR’s 2016 Top 400 Contractors after being ranked 112 the previous year.

The 50-year-old firm with 376 employees located in the D.C. area attributes this jump in revenue to multi-year strategic pre-construction and tactical pursuits. DAVIS does 55 percent of its work in general building and 42 percent in interior/tenant improvements.

They are working on the Capital One Headquarters Campus in Tysons Corner, Va. as well as plenty of other major projects in the D.C. area, including the Uline Arena. A long-standing icon in D.C., Uline was the location of the Beatles’ first concert in the United States and President Eisenhower’s first inaugural ball. But for the last two decades the arena has been abandoned. Now DAVIS is the GC on the preservation of this “historic and architecturally impressive gem.” The former arena will be a multi-level retail and office space that will house D.C.’s REI flagship store.

Another notable project underway in D.C. is at 655 New York Ave. The $122.5 million triangular mixed-use development will feature retail and office space next to the Washington Convention Center. The 614,000-sq-ft development will incorporate 15 historic buildings, a new 200,000-sq-ft garage and a new curved curtain wall office tower.
