ENR MidAtlantic has named Pennoni Associates, Philadelphia, as its Design Firm of the Year. Established in 1966, Pennoni is a multi-disciplinary firm that has seen strong growth in recent years—both organically and through acquisitions. Revenues grew steadily from $94.1 million in 2009 to $127.6 million in 2013.

The firm’s portfolio is deeply rooted in municipal work, serving as municipal engineer for more than 200 townships. It also tallies nearly a third of its business in the transportation sector, including recent work on I-81 in Virginia and the I-95 HOV project south of the Capital Beltway. Pennoni is also involved in several significant building projects in the region, especially in Philadelphia where recent work includes Cira South, the Berger Center at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and the new Comcast Center tower. In recent years, the firm has worked to expand its “strategic alliances,” expanding its range of services into areas such as energy, water resources, mining and others. The firm also houses an Intelligent Infrastructure Systems division, which offers technology solutions to provide detailed and reliable information on the integrity of infrastructure, such as bridges.

Acquisitions have helped accelerate Pennoni’s growth as well. In 2011, it acquired Patton Harris Rust & Associates, Chantilly, Va. The move added 175 staff members in 7 offices, significantly expanding its presence in Virginia and Maryland. In 2013, it acquired Green Stone Engineering, Newark, Del., which bolstered its presence in the water sectors. The firm also added MEP firm B.D.
