ENR MidAtlantic named Skanska USA its Contractor of the Year in the region, which covers Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia. Skanska saw its revenues grow significantly coming out of the recession. Prior to the downturn, the company typically saw regional revenues in the range of $300 million to $500 million. In 2013, the firm reported $636 million in mid-Atlantic revenues.

Some of its success was built on a solid base of traditional work in sectors such as health care and education. However, the firm’s development capabilities offered Skanska an added boost. While public-private partnerships and commercial development are common for the firm in Europe and other non-U.S. markets, it is still gaining a foothold domestically. Skanska made its first U.S. investment in a commercial development project in Washington, D.C., with its project at 10th and G Street. Since then, the company has pursued numerous commercial development projects in the region.

The company’s largest project in the region is the $2-billion Midtown Tunnel in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia, where Skanska is working under PPP with Kiewit and Weeks Marine. The Midtown Tunnel will provide a new two-lane tunnel under the Elizabeth River when completed in 2018.

Skanska is engaged in other major civil infrastructure work in the region, including a $330-million tunnel for DC Water, which will expand the capacity of the DC Water CSO system. The project is part of DC Water’s $2.6-billion Clean Rivers Project. Skanska also broke ground on the $151-million First Street Tunnel project for DC Water last year.

Other notable Skanska projects in the region include the $168-million Children’s Pavilion at Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU, the $210-million expansion of Wilmington (Del.) Hospital, a $37.4 million addition at The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia and American University’s $78-million East Campus project in D.C.

Skanska will be featured in ENR MidAtlantic’s August 11, 2014 issue, which will also include our annual ranking of the Top Contractors in the region by revenue.
