St. Luke’s Episcopal Health System in Houston opened its $28.5-million Lakeside Hospital, a new addition on the campus of St. Luke’s The Woodlands Hospital. Designed by RTKL, with offices in Dallas, the new 90,000-sq-ft hospital includes 30 inpatient beds, six operating rooms and three cardiac catheterization labs, as well as diagnostic imaging technologies. The recently opened Lakeside Hospital is a 90,000-sq-ft addition on the campus of St. Luke’s The Woodlands Hospital. It was designed by RTKL and built by Bellows Construction. Northeast Lakeview College, the newest addition to Alamo Colleges, recently opened. Built in two phases in four years, the nine-building campus is in Universal City about 15 mi northeast of San Antonio. Austin-based Burt-Watts Inc. recently completed a new headquarters space for Austin-based software innovators, Bazaarvoice. The company’s new 50,800-sq-ft headquarters in Austin represents an expansion from the company’s previous headquarters. Three of the largest toll agencies in the U.S. released new data recently that demonstrating that the number of traffic accidents at open road tolling (or ORT) plazas is significantly less than that at traditional toll plazas. “From the data that we have on the toll roads Texas Dept. of Transportation operates, open-road tolling facilities have far fewer traffic accidents,” Karen Amacker, TxDOT spokesperson, tells Texas Construction. The Port Commission of The Port of Houston Authority recently authorized the sale of $235 million in unlimited tax refunding bonds and approved the 2010 operating budget. The commission also approved awarding a contract to Houston-based Republic Services/BFI Waste Systems to provide trash disposal and recycling services for the Turning Basin, Barbours Cut and Woodhouse terminals and the Fireboat barracks for a two-year term for $2.2 million. The Ronald McDonald House of Dallas recently dedicated its new 60,000-sq-ft space designed by HKS Architects. HKS Architects, HKS Commercial Interiors and Hill & Wilkinson General Contractors provided reduced fees for services. The team also secured in-kind donations totaling more than $1 million to help defray the cost of the building.
