United States Steel Corp. and CarbonFree Chemicals Holdings LLC, in a joint venture, are considering constructing a carbon capture and utilization plant at U.S. Steel’s Gary Works steel mill site in Gary. The project scope includes construction of foundations and installation of modular process units. The facility would have the capacity to capture 50,000 metric tons of CO₂ per year from the steel mill to produce precipitated calcium carbonate and hydrochloric acid as a co-product. A construction schedule will be developed following a definitive agreement, which is expected by the end of 2023; the facility would be operational in 2025. The estimated EPC cost is $85 million.
