Award of Merit Water/Environment: Hopewell Precision Superfund Site
The project involved providing a new source of clean drinking water for 322 residences and businesses in Hopewell Junction, N.Y., after a groundwater pollution plume was discovered. A 200-gallon-per-minute pump station and a 310,000-gallon prestressed concrete water storage tank were built to provide a clean source of water for local businesses and residents.
The work required extensive team coordination—internally as well as with homeowners and business owners. The team had to disconnect each property from the contaminated groundwater and reconnect each to new water sources until construction was complete on the replacement system. Well inspections also had to be performed at each home and business, with all wells decommissioned at the end of the process to prevent any further use.
