The Smithsonian Institution plans to restore and renovate the Castle, its 1855 Norman Revival-style red sandstone building, which houses administrative offices and the visitor center. It will be seismically braced and blast protected, and the Upper Great Hall will be returned to its full size. Heating, cooling and other infrastructure systems will be upgraded. Bjarke Ingels Group has been chosen as the designer. Construction is expected to begin in 2023 and be completed by 2028. The project is valued at $500 million.
