The project team was charged with moving electricity from renewable sources across diverse terrain extending from a southeastern California desert to urban coastal areas. The new energy line extends along three miles of overhead steel poles and 12 miles of underground cable to serve most of San Diego County. In addition to the high fire danger, obstacles included traversing congested city streets and a major interstate freeway. Crossing the 16-lane I-15 required crews to install 930 ft of concrete casing and a fiberglass conduit system.

Among other achievements, the new line ensures that sustainable wind and solar power can flow from power generation areas where development costs are lower to coastal and urban areas where demand and costs are higher.
