The Interstate 635 LBJ Freeway in Dallas is set to undergo a $1.7-billion upgrade to improve capacity, safety and operational efficiency in a corridor that currently handles more than 200,000 vehicles per day. AECOM Technical Services Inc., is the primary designer for the design-build project, which is being led by a joint venture of Fluor and Balfour Beatty. The project team will widen and reconstruct 11.2 miles of highway, increasing total width to 12 lanes. Elements include adding a general-purpose lane in each direction, making improvements to existing tolled express lanes and rebuilding the freeway’s interchange with Interstate 30. The project also includes the addition of continuous frontage roads along the segment and intersection to improve local traffic flow and freeway access. A bridge will also be incorporated into the Skillman Road/Audelia Street intersection adjacent to the freeway.
