In May, HOK revealed the design of a new headquarters for Royal Caribbean Cruises in Miami. The $300-million, 10-story, 350,000-sq-ft building will be located on Dodge Island, close to cruise ship terminals in Biscayne Bay. The new headquarters consolidates current operations from two separate office buildings and temporary spaces. Referencing the look of the company’s iconic cruise ships, the exterior edge of each floor extends out three to 12 feet from the building, providing shade to the floors below each edge. At night, an LED scheme will illuminate the edges. Large terraces face downtown Miami. Upper terraces will surround a three-story garden atrium open at the roof. Most of the workspaces will feature an open plan to facilitate collaboration. In anticipation of the potential impact of rising sea levels caused by climate change, the lobby is more than 15 feet above sea level. Critical equipment is also elevated as part of the resilient design. Construction is scheduled to begin in June with completion estimated for late 2020.
