Newtown Poised To Select Sandy Hook Memorial Design
Newtown, Conn., is set to select the final design for a permanent memorial to the 26 people who died during the 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. The town’s memorial commission will review the top three submissions on July 30 for a memorial to be built on a 5.3-acre site a quarter of a mile from the rebuilt school, which opened approximately two years ago.
Narrowed from 200 submissions, the three finalists presented their designs to the commission on July 17. The top three design teams are San Francisco-based SWA Group; Tempe, Ariz.-based Arleo Design Studio; and a team comprising two Minneapolis-based firms (Damon Farber Landscape Architects and RSP Dreambox) and New Haven, Conn.-based Svigals + Partners. The last also served as the architect for the school building.
