U.S. Steel is forging ahead with a $4-billion, mixed-use development at its former South Works in Chicago. The 400-acre lakefront site, located between 79th and 83rd streets about 10 miles from downtown, will house a marina, 13,575 residential units and 17.5 million sq ft of retail and commercial space spread over approximately 275 acres. The developer will donate 100-125 acres back to the city for park and shore land. Phase 1 will feature 800,000 sq ft of retail and 1,000 apartments; building pad construction is tentatively scheduled for this summer. Mall of America continues to plan, design and execute the $1.5-billion expansion of its namesake development in the Twin Cities community of Bloomington.
