On the $4.3-million Northside Hospital Ground Floor Surgery Renovation and Addition project, Batson-Cook Construction overhauled 16,000 sq ft of existing surgery space while also expanding the waiting room by 585 sq ft. The project  included the addition of two operating rooms and four post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) bays as well as the expansion of another OR and PACU unit. Contractors also added seven pre-op bays, renovated an existing preoperative unit and expanded and renovated the pharmacy.  Additionally,  crews replaced ceiling and flooring within the existing OR sterile corridors each weekend.

The work required numerous shutdowns and alteration of existing surgery space on an almost weekly basis. The contractor maintained constant communication and coordination with hospital staff and administrators. For instance, crews began renovation of existing spaces, which often required demolition, on Fridays at midnight, after the last surgery was performed, and would run until Sunday morning. Contractors scheduled this work many weeks in advance so the hospital could schedule patient cases at other locations if needed.

The project included 18 separate phases carried out over the hospital’s ground floor, with all work completed within 20 weeks.
