California Poseidon Resources Corp. is planning to build a desalination plant in Carlsbad. The project entails building a seawater desalination facility with the capacity to deliver 50 million gallons of potable water a day as well as a 10-mile-long water-conveyance pipeline. The San Diego County Water Authority has agreed to buy enough water from the plant to supply 112,000 homes. The EPC contractor is a joint venture of Kiewit Infrastructure and J.F. Shea Construction. Florida Living Well Lodges LLC is planning to build Crane's View Lodge, an assisted-living facility west of Orlando in Clermont. The project entails constructing two five-story buildings, totaling 95,000 sq-ft and containing 75 assisted-living beds and a 50-bed memory-care unit. Idaho The J.R. Simplot Co., one of the largest privately held U.S. agribusiness operations, plans to construct the J.R. Simplot Foundation building, which will be the centerpiece of Jack's Urban Meeting Place, a four-block mixed-use development in downtown Boise. Iowa The Des Moines Social Club is planning to convert former Fire Station No. 1 into the club's home. The project will adapt the two-story, 37,400-sq-ft Depression-era modernist building into theater spaces, indoor and outdoor restaurants, retail outlets and offices. Maine The National Guard Bureau has awarded a $23-million firm-fixed-price contract to J.C.N. Construction to build an Armed Forces Reserve Center in Brunswick. The project entails the construction of a single-story, 62,901-sq-ft building at 550 Neptune Dr. at the site of the former Brunswick Naval Air Station. The building will contain administrative offices, equipment storage rooms, an arms vault, equipment locker rooms, unit-level maintenance bays, an assembly hall, a library and a kitchen as well as parking areas, fencing and a standby generator. Missouri The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has awarded a $12-million firm-fixed-price contract to Brigadier Construction Services LLC for the partial renovation of the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Kansas City. The project entails renovating two and a half floors, including the 7E dialysis, fifth- floor inpatient surgery and tenth-floor inpatient psychiatry departments. The work involves demolition and removal of existing structures, asbestos abatement, plumbing, HVAC and electrical. There will be special water requirements for dialysis procedures, including a reverse-osmosis system and a dialyzing-acid system. The project is expected to be completed by October 2014. Rhode Island Brown University has selected BOND to provide construction management services for the comprehensive renovation of Brown University's Barus and Holley Building and Prince Laboratory in Providence. The seven-story, 220,000-sq-ft Barus and Holley Building houses the university's engineering and physics departments, including their labs, offices and classrooms. The two-story Prince Laboratory contains research space, a machine shop and offices. The job will install new switchgear, cooling towers, chillers, heat exchangers, boilers and air handling units as well as modernize of two existing elevators. Using integrated project delivery, BOND will work closely with the university, architect Imai Keller Moore, engineer WSP Flack + Kurtz, and electrical and mechanical subcontractors to develop a detailed sequencing and phasing plan that will maintain 24-7 operability in the buildings' laboratories. The project's first phase entails the interior demolition of 12,000 sq ft of clinic space on the first floor of the Physicians Plaza II Building as well as the construction of a 1,600-sq-ft linear accelerator vault and a 1,400-sq-ft building-shell addition.
