Massachusetts The University of Massachusetts Amherst is planning to build a new academic classroom building. The five-story, 150,000-sq-ft building will contain seating for 1,800 students and offices for the communication, journalism and linguistics programs as well as TV studios, editing rooms, film screening rooms, and speech-perception and auditory-phonetics labs. The building has been designed by Burt, Hill. Construction is expected to start in September 2011 and be completed by January 2014. The estimated construction cost is $85 million. South Dakota The Oglala Sioux tribe is planning to build a new justice center in Pine Ridge. The 93,000-sq-ft building will house tribal courts, attorney-general and public-defender offices, law enforcement offices, a corrections facility with 64 adult and 18 juvenile beds, and housing for tribal police officers. It will feature a circular outdoor courtyard, which will be the location of restorative justice ceremonies. It was designed by a team made up of Venture Architects and Standing Stone Design. Gruen Associates/Beezley Management are serving as the construction management/project advisory team. Construction is expected to start in fall 2011 and take about 15 months.
