An arching bridge, designed by London-based Zaha Hadid Architects to evoke undulating sand dunes, is now beginning construction in Abu Dhabi, according to the U.K.s High-Point Rendel Ltd., the projects engineering designer and project manager. Made of post-tensioned concrete below the deck, the arch will turn to steelwork above to support a 234-meter-long main span. The 845-m-long bridge dominates a $175-million, 1.4-kilometer-long central section of a new 8-km link with the mainland. Emirates-based Archirodon Construction Co. S.A. won the bridge construction contract. Two other teams will build the projects links.
