The Coalition Provisional Authority on July 1 invited commercial airlines to submit proposals for service to Baghdad International Airport, signaling that reconstruction there is at a turning point. Air Force engineers have repaired runway craters and installed more than five miles of airfield cable and more than 150 edge-way, taxiway and threshold light fixtures. They also repaired existing lighting systems that were neglected for more than a dozen years. Bechtel also reports that it is building temporary terminal areas, repairing sanitation facilities, providing communications and has installed generators for 6.5 Mw of power.
