House, Senate to Vote on 8th Stopgap, Extending Through July 19
With no agreement yet on a multi-year highway and transit bill, Congress planned to approve yet another short extension of the federal transportation programs, the eighth since September 2003. House and Senate staffers say both chambers intended to vote on the new stopgap on June 30, the date on which the previous extension expires. The latest stopgap would keep federal aid flowing through July 19.
House and Senate negotiators have been engaged in "almost nonstop" meetings in recent days, trying to work out a deal on the outline of a new multi-year bill, a Senate Environment and Public Works Committee aide says.
