FERC OKs Test Program For East River Hydro Project
Saying it wants to promote innovative energy technologies, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has approved an 18-month test program for six underwater turbines in New York Citys East River. Verdant Power LLC, Arlington, Va., had applied for permission to test a limited number of 21-kW turbines to harness the rivers tidal power (ENR 1/24 p. 17). FERC granted the petition, finding that the test does not require licensing under the Federal Power Act if power is not sold into the grid. Verdant will install two turbines this month followed by four more after observing how they affect fish.
