A massive magnitude 7.9 earthquake devastated much of China’s Sichuan Province, killing more than 12,000 people. The epicenter was 52 miles northwest of Sichuan’s capital Chengdu. The quake occurred at a depth of 11.8 miles. The official Xinhua News Agency says that 80% of the buildings in Beichuan County in Sichuan collapsed after the quake. Just east of the epicenter, 1,000 students and teachers were killed or missing when a six-story high school building collapsed into a pile of rubble only two meters high, says Xinhua.
