Foster Wheeler North America Corp., Clinton, N.J., and Praxair Inc., Danbury, Conn., have signed a multi-year agreement to jointly pursue clean-coal demonstration projects using oxy-combustion, a process that injects oxygen into a powerplant’s fuel mixture. The process produces a pure stream of carbon dioxide, facilitating its capture. Alliance officials expect the first commercial effort to be a 50-MW circulating fluidized-bed demonstration project planned by the Jamestown, N.Y., Board of Public Utilities. The $145-million project, the first oxy-combustion project in the U.S., is being designed by Washington Group International, Boise, says Steve Kulig, Jamestown BPU’s technical director.
