Environmental Regulators and Chemical Company Make Peace
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has settled with Dow Chemical Co. to clean up three dioxin-contaminated areas on six miles of the Tittabawassee River downstream of Midland, Mich. Details and cost of the July 13 settlement are still being determined, but Dow is to develop a removal plan, excavate and/or dredge soil and sediment, stabilize river banks, dispose of contaminated material, revegetate the floodplain and perform sampling and chemical analysis as removal progresses.
