The market for wind energy grew 27% in 2006, and wind-turbine manufacturers are investing as if they expect further extension of the federal production tax credit. Denmark-based Vestas Wind Systems A/S announced plans to construct a $60-million, 200,000-sq-ft factory in Windsor, Colo., to produce turbine blades. “We see an increasingly great commitment from all stakeholders to wind,” says Jens Søby, president of Vestas Americas A/S, Portland, Ore. At the end of 2006, U.S. wind energy totaled 11,603 MW, according to the American Wind Energy Association. AWEA forecasts more than 3,000 MW more this year.
