A governor-appointed panel in Washington state has issued a preliminary report detailing priorities for the cleanup and restoration of the Puget Sound by 2020. The panel's final report will be issued in November, and the state legislature will vote on its recommendations in 2007. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has 17 Superfund sites in the area and the state Dept. of Ecology has 553 active cleanup sites.
