Former Kansas Gov. Bill Graves says he is not interested in being U.S. Secretary of Transportation. A published report claimed that Graves, who now is the American Trucking Associations’ president and CEO, had “emerged as a top candidate” to succeed Norman Mineta as DOT chief. But Graves has informed the trucking group’s board that he will continue in his ATA job.
Graves, a Republican, was governor of Kansas from 1995 to 2003 and later that year became ATA’s CEO. He signed a five-year contract extension in February. Graves told the ATA board in a July 12 statement: “I enthusiastically stand by the commitment I made to you in February and look forward to continuing my leadership role with the American Trucking Associations.”
