The number of reported security incidents involving the Internet increased 170% between 2000 and 2001, a security monitoring center at Carnegie Mellon University reported Jan. 10.

Reported incidents, which the Computer emergency Response Team says includes attempts to use or gain unauthorized access to systems or data, increased from 21,756 to 52,658 last year, while the number of "vulnerabilities" reported rose from 1,090 to 2,437. Details of the report are at www.cert.org.
