ARIZONA The Salt River Project announced plans to proceed with development of two natural-gas powerplants in Pinal County and maintain an option to build a third near Eloy. The planned powerplants will be constructed on the “Abel” site, adjacent to the Abel substation in northwest Florence, and the “Pinal Central” site, adjacent to the Pinal Central substation site south of Coolidge. SRP will continue to pursue a project near Eloy at the corner of Arizona Rte. 87 and Hanna Rd., but doesn’t need the power immediately. The Abel site, which is estimated to cost $739 million, will be an 850-MW peaking powerplant that only runs in the summer when energy demand is highest. The cost for the 1,150-MW Pinal Central facility, which is a more complex combined-cycle plant, is expected to cost more. Pending approval from the Arizona Corporation Commission, the Abel plant is expected to be operational by 2012 and Pinal Central between 2014 and 2022. Salt River Project, 1521 N.
