ARIZONA The Salt River Project announced plans to proceed with development of two natural-gas powerplants in Pinal County and maintain an option to build a third near Eloy. The planned powerplants will be constructed on the “Abel” site, adjacent to the Abel substation in northwest Florence, and the “Pinal Central” site, adjacent to the Pinal Central substation site south of Coolidge. SRP will continue to pursue a project near Eloy at the corner of Arizona Rte. 87 and Hanna Rd., but doesn’t need the power immediately. The Abel site, which is estimated to cost $739 million, will be an 850-MW peaking powerplant that only runs in the summer when energy demand is highest. The cost for the 1,150-MW Pinal Central facility, which is a more complex combined-cycle plant, is expected to cost more. NEW JERSEY The new $95-million Monroe Township High School is being built by Seacoast Builders Corp. for the Monroe Township Board of Education. NORTH CAROLINA A $99.7-million design-build contract has been awarded to Caddell Construction by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District, for a new 510,266-sq-ft barracks and operations complex that will serve 672 personnel at Fort Bragg. The scope of the project includes a new 258,360-sq-ft barracks building, a 40,000-sq-ft brigade headquarters and two 16,400-sq-ft battalion headquarters buildings, and 14 company operations facilities. TENNESSEE Skanska has been awarded a $146-million construction-management contract by Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center for a 12-story, 600,000-sq-ft children's hospital in Memphis. The new hospital, with 225 patient rooms designed to accommodate two relatives, will include a number of pediatric specialties, as well as cardiovascular and neonatal intensive care units. The hospital also will feature a mini-movie theater and areas for play and schooling. Construction is expected to be completed in 2010.
