Illinois The University of Chicago is planning to build the William Eckhardt Research Center, a five-story, 265,000-sq-ft building. The cast-in-place concrete structure will utilize slurry-wall construction for the basement wall and include chilled-beam technology and heat recovery systems. The building will contain offices, laboratories, conference rooms and the Institute of Molecular Engineering, with a 9,200-sq-ft clean room and an imaging suite below grade. HOK, along with James Carpenter Design Associates, is handling design; W.E. O’Neil is serving as the construction manager. The project also entails demolishing the existing Research Institutes Building, Low-Temp Building and the Astronomy and Astrophysics Center at 5630-5650 S. Maryland The National Security Agency is designing a new supercomputing center, to be located at Fort Meade. The High-Performance Computing Center will feature 60 MW of power, depressed slab construction—with a floor load rating of 600 lb per sq in.—and a chilled-water system. The estimated construction cost is $895 million. The cost of the primary facility, including modular shell buildings, antiterrorism hardening and fire protection, will be $567 million. The total includes $118 million for mechanical systems and $225 million for electrical systems. Security features will include a vehicle cargo-inspection facility, visitor control center, and chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear detection systems. California Napa County has selected LSA Associates Inc. to prepare an environmental impact report for the redevelopment of the Health and Human Services campus in Napa. The project includes demolition of most of the 12 existing buildings on the site, construction of four new buildings totaling 184,000 sq ft, and 550 parking spaces. Florida The Florida Dept. of Transportation has selected Atkins North America Inc. to provide construction engineering and inspection services for Interstate 75, from south of state Route 582 to north of county Route 581 and from north of county Route 581 to state Route 56. Florida The Solid-Waste Authority of Palm Beach County has awarded CDM and a consortium consisting of BE&K Construction Co. LLC and Babcock & Wilcox Power Generation Group a $667 million design-build contract for a 3,000-lb-per-day mass-burn waste-to-energy facility. The facility will generate 95 MW of electricity. Hawaii The Naval Facilities Engineering Command has awarded a $62.7-million contract to Nan Inc. to build a new Central Identification Laboratory for the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. South Carolina The Clemson University Restoration Institute has awarded a $22-million construction management contract to Choate Construction Co. to build a wind-turbine drivetrain testing facility . The project entails retrofitting Building 69, an 82,264-sq-ft former Navy warehouse, located at the Charleston Naval Complex in North Charleston. The project entails building foundations for the two test rigs, new plumbing, electrical and HVAC systems, new cladding, and building viewing galleries, so the scientists can observe the testing. Virginia The Naval Facilities Engineering Command has awarded a $12.8- million firm-fixed-price design-build contract to S.B.
