Virginia The Rivanna Water & Sewer Authority is proposing to build a new earthen dam to replace an existing 1908 cyclopean concrete dam supported by an earthen buttress built in the 1930s. The structural height of the new dam will be approximately 125 ft tall, built to support an increase in the Ragged Mountain Reservoir pool height of 30 feet. The foundation and the crest of the dam will be built to allow for the future addition of 12 ft to the pool height. Designed by Schnabel Engineering, the new earthen dam has various safety features, including a tunnel separated from the dam structure for the primary spillway and water-supply piping as well as an emergency spillway remote from the dam structure. The construction job, which is projected to take two years, is expected to be bid in late summer and start this fall. The estimated construction cost is between $15.7 million and $19.2 million.
