IOWA The University of Iowa regents have approved a $75-million makeover of the Iowa Memorial Union, which was damaged by a flood in 2008. The four-story, 340,000-sq-ft building will be refurbished to include the campus bookstore, expanded food service and a six-lane bowling alley. Flood mitigation and ground-floor refurbishing, including student lounge space, food service and shells for outside vendors will cost $53 million. Another $22 million will be for deferred maintenance, including a new sprinkler system, a new roof and upgrades to meet Disabilities Act standards. No contractor has been chosen yet. MINNESOTA The Ordway Center for the Performing Arts in St. Paul currently comprises four venues: the 1,900-seat Music Theater, the 315-seat McKnight Theatre and two large rehearsal halls. Ordway plans to replace the McKnight Theatre with a 1,100-seat music venue. Construction is scheduled to start in 2012. FLORIDA INEOS New Planet Bio-Energy has selected AMEC to build a commercial-scale bio-ethanol facility in Vero Beach. The plant will produce eight million gallons of ethanol per year from biomass, including yard, wood, vegetative and municipal solid wastes. The plant is scheduled to begin operating in 2012. MASSACHUSETTS Fitchburg State University has awarded a $42-million contract to BOND to build a 54,700-sq-ft expansion to the Condike Science Center. The project also entails renovating the existing building. The expanded facility will provide biology and chemistry laboratories, classrooms and support functions. NEW YORK Hudson Valley Community College has tapped Mosaic Architects for commissioning services for a three-story, 114,000-sq-ft science center on its Troy campus. TEXAS Texas Tech University Sys-tem has selected the SHW Group to provide design services for a 30,000-sq-ft autism education and research center in Lubbock. The project includes an Adult Transition Academy, a Teacher Preparation Academy, new research and sup-port spaces, new class labs, lecture rooms and offices. The project goal is LEED certification. WISCONSIN Milwaukee Health Care Properties LLC has awarded a $16-million build-to-suit contract to The Congress Cos. for the renovation and construction of the Bel Air Health Center, a three-story, 102,000-sq-ft rehabilitation and nursing building, which will be leased to the operator, Elite Senior Living.
