CALIFORNIA The Long Beach City Council recently approved the environmental impact report for the new Gerald Desmond Bridge. The new cable-stayed, six-lane, 2,000-ft-long bridge will handle higher traffic volumes than the existing four-lane span. The new bridge will be 50 ft higher than the existing crossing, so as to permit the new generation of mega-cargo ships to pass. It will be located 140 ft north of the existing bridge and be delivered via design-build. Construction is expected to begin in 2011 and last for five or six years. The estimated construction cost is $1.1 billion. Port of Long Beach, 925 Harbor Plaza, Long Beach, 90802. DR#01-00876808.
