HAWAII The National Solar Observatory (NSO) is planning to build the Advanced Technology Solar Telescope (ATST) on Mount Haleakala on the island of Maui in Hawaii. ATST will be the largest solar telescope in the world. NSO has awarded the design contract for the telescope enclosure to AEC Engineering, which is part of the IDOM group. The ATST enclosure will be a 143-ft-tall structure designed to protect the telescope assembly; it will include a variety of mechanical subsystems to enable the structure to point, track and slew. Construction is expected to begin in 2012 and be completed in 2015. National Solar Observatory, 3010 Coronal Loop, Sunspot, New Mexico, 88349.
