TEXAS The city of McAllen is planning construction of a new library. The project will entail converting a former big-box-store building into a 130,000-sq-ft facility, with conference and meeting rooms, a kitchen for catered events, a coffee shop and a computer lab. If all the features are included in the final design, the project will cost $28.5 million. The design work was done by Boultinghouse Simpson Architects, McAllen, and MS&R, Minneapolis. CALIFORNIA Stronghold Engineering Inc. has been awarded a $10-million firm-fixed-price design-build contract by the Naval Facilities Engineering Command for bachelor quarters modernization. The work entails upgrading 130 rooms in Buildings 14 and 15, at Naval Air Station Lemoore. The upgraded layouts will feature two private sleeping rooms with closet, a shared bathroom, and kitchenette. Work is expected to be completed by January 2011. CALIFORNIA Clark Construction Group–Calif. LP has been awarded a $27.7-million firm-fixed-price design-build contract for a regional confinement facility at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. The facility will take prisoners from other correctional facilities scheduled for closure under the Base Realignment and Closure Act. Work is expected to be completed by February 2011. CONNECTICUT Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Co. LLC has been awarded a $9.6-million firm-fixed price contract by the Naval Facilities Engineering Command for dredging services at the Naval Submarine Base New London. FLORIDA The Whiting-Turner Contracting Co. has been awarded a $37.4- million firm-fixed-price design-build contract by the Naval Facilities Engineering Command for an operational training facility for multimission aircraft at Naval Air Station Jacksonville. The facility includes space for 10 operational flight trainers, eight weapons-tactics trainers, four part-task trainers, support equipment, bridge cranes over the flight simulation devices, computer-based training stations, internal and external network communication equipment, training media storage, maintenance-support shops, administrative offices, study rooms, briefing areas and secure, compartmented information facilities. PENNSYLVANIA DTC Engineers & Constructors LLC has been awarded a $16.9-million firm-fixed-price contract by the Naval Facilities Engineering Command for the complete renovation of building 9 at Naval Support Activity Mechanicsburg. The project entails converting a warehouse into modern office space and installation of a new heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system. Work is expected to be completed by March 2011. SOUTH CAROLINA Sauer Inc. has been awarded an $8.4 million firm-fixed-price contract for construction of a child development center at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C. The new center will provide child care for full-day, part-day, and hourly care for pre-school aged children. The project includes utilities, parking and anti-terrorism force protection. VIRGINIA The Haskell Company has been awarded an $11.6-million firm-fixed-price design-build contract by the Naval Facilities Engineering Command for a headquarters building for the U.S. Joint Forces Command in Norfolk. The multistory building will contain administrative areas, space for commercial food service vendors, one sensitive compartmented information facility, conference rooms, data processing areas, storage and an emergency generator.
