CALIFORNIA TB Penick & Sons has been awarded a firm-fixed-price contract by the Southwest Naval Facilities and Engineering Command for the design and construction of four bachelor enlisted quarters at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. The barracks will have a total build area of 40,000 sq ft and provide housing for 1,384 Marines in a standard configuration, including multipurpose and laundry areas. The contract is valued at $103.7 million and contains five options, which if exercised would increase the cumulative contract value to $110.5 million. Contract funds will not expire at the end of the year. Work is expected to begin this month, and completion of the project is currently set for June 2011. CONNECTICUT The Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Mid-Atlantic, has awarded a contract to American Bridge for the construction of a new pier at the New London Submarine Base in Groton. The existing Pier 31 will be demolished under the contract, and the existing 36-in. pipes the pier is founded on will be located and filled with concrete. Work involves the construction of temporary work trestles as well as new piles and a cast-in-place concrete deck. Other work will include installation of electrical shore power, pier lighting, water, sewer, compressed air and loading cranes. This contract is an extension of a previous contract for pier reconstruction work at the New London Submarine Base. HAWAII Road & Highway Builders, a subsidiary of Houston, Texas-based Sterling Construction, was awarded a contract by the Federal Highway Administration for road reconstruction of Saddle Road on the island of Oahu. Work will include grading, drainage and paving on 7.46 miles of Saddle Road/state Route 200. Other work will include embankment construction, pipe culverts, riprap and storm drainage. The contract is estimated at $32.8 million. Work is expected to start in October of this year, and completion is expected in October 2011. KANSAS Turner Construction has been selected by the University of Kansas to provide construction management services for a new, six-story medical office building in downtown Kansas City. The 183,000-sq-ft, structural-steel frame building will be located to the south of the university and will house eighteen departments currently scattered across the campus, including facilities for exam, clinic, diagnostic and treatment. This project intends to seek LEED certification and will include sustainable design elements such as water-efficient landscaping, energy performance optimization, thermal comfort controls and the use of recycled and locally obtained construction materials. MINNESOTA Holte/Graham joint venture was awarded a contract by the U.S. Property & Fiscal Officer of Minnesota for construction of the first phase of a new readiness center at the Arden Hills Army Training Site. The one-story, 53,000-sq-ft. building will have brick walls, concrete floors and a single-ply membrane roof. Work will also include demolition of a 46,000-sq-ft existing building, as well as construction of parking areas, fencing, sidewalks, lighting and access roads. NORTH CAROLINA Balfour Beatty Construction LLC was awarded a firm- fixed-price $37.5-million contract by the U.S. Army Engineering District, Savannah, Ga., for the design and construction of two new schools at Fort Bragg. A new 123,000-sq-ft, 714-student elementary school and a 99,000-sq-ft, 550-student middle school will be built at Fort Bragg’s Northern Training Area off Camel Road, and the contract also includes utilities, parking, playground areas, sports facilities, fencing, landscaping and site development. The project will be designed to Dept. of Defense Educational Facilities specifications and energy-conservation standards. The project also is seeking LEED Silver certification. NORTH CAROLINA Turner Construction was awarded a contract to provide construction-management services for Harrah’s Cherokee Hotel Tower III in Cherokee. The 500,000-sq-ft, 21-story building will have 532 rooms, including 68 suites and a sky bridge connecting it to the two existing hotel towers. The project is currently estimated at $120 million. SOUTH CAROLINA The South Carolina Electric & Gas Co. has awarded a contract for engineering, procurement and construction services for a nuclear reactor at Jenkinsville to a team of The Shaw Group and Westinghouse Electric Co. The contract covers the V.C. Summer Nuclear Station Unit 1 and is an extension of a previous contract awarded to Shaw and Westinghouse for design and construction services related to the new units 2 and 3 at the powerplant. The contract calls for Shaw to provide maintenance, modification, refueling outage as well as design and engineering services for V.C. Summer Unit 1 immediately, as well as for the other two units once they are online. The contract will be handled by the Maintenance and Fossil & Nuclear segments of Shaw’s Power Group. The value of the contract to Shaw was not disclosed, but the valuation of the entire V.C. Summer nuclear upgrade project is currently estimated at $9.8 billion. UTAH URS has been awarded a three-year contract by the State of Utah Division of Oil, Gas and Mining to provide reclamation engineering services on an on-call basis for the agency’s Abandoned Mine Reclamation Project. The contract calls for steel and concrete rehabilitation on the George Washington Bridge. Work includes replacement of corroded steel, repairs and replacement of spalled concrete, replacement of missing rivets with high-strength bolts and related rehabilitation work. PENNSYLVANIA 8/17 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Pittsburgh District, Contracting Division, 727 WM S. Moorhead Federal Building, 1000 Liberty Ave., Pittsburgh, 15222-4004, bridge replacement. The contract calls for repairs to the Emsworth Back Channel Service Bridge at the Emsworth Locks and Dam over the Ohio River. Work will include replacement of all bridge bearings, which will require jacking each of the bridge’s spans, as well as replacement of the bulkhead- hoist monorail beam and its conductor system. Other work will include relocation of the rails and electrical system for the service crane and construction of a new walkway. Components of the bridge that are reused will be cleaned and painted, and the adjacent fuel storage room will be rehabilitated. The contract is estimated at between $5 million and $10 million. The Deloitte Learning and Innovation Corporate Campus in Westlake will consist of a 750,000-sq-ft campus with a five-story corporate hotel. This contract will cover construction of the hotel. The 688,000-sq-ft hotel will have 802 guest rooms and 97,000-sq-ft of meeting space. It also will contain classrooms, restaurants, a ballroom, a business center and fitness and recreational facilities. This project intends to seek LEED certification.
