FLORIDA Skanska USA has been awarded a contract by the Nemours Foundation to provide construction-management services for the new Nemours Children’s Hospital in Orlando. The 630,000-sq-ft project will feature a 395,000-sq-ft hospital with a 95-bed in-patient tower, emergency department, diagnostic and ambulatory programs as well as education and research centers. These facilities will be integrated with an outpatient clinic also located on the 60-acre site. The project will include a 600-car parking garage and a helipad. The project’s owner intends to seek LEED certification. Site work began in June, and completion is scheduled for June 2012. The contract is valued at $220 million. MASSACHUSETTS The Massachusetts Water Resources Authority has selected Stantec to design the rehabilitation of the West Roxbury Tunnel, a major sewer tunnel in Boston. The 12,500-ft-long, 84-in.-dia tunnel is severely corroded and will have to be rehabilitated or replaced. It is located at depths to 220 ft and has limited points of access. Stantec will perform an examination of the tunnel’s conditions and will evaluate various strategies for rehabilitation and realignment. Additional work includes traffic control, hazardous-materials handling, surveying and other related services. The project valuation is estimated at $16 million. IOWA The U.S. General Services Administration has awarded a $15-million contract to Ryan Cos. to provide construction-management services for the new U.S. courthouse in Cedar Rapids. The eight-story, 300,000-sq-ft, structural-steel-frame building will feature several sustainable construction elements, including daylighting and energy-efficient glazing. The project intends to seek LEED Silver certification. Site work has begun, and construction is expected to begin this month. The project value is estimated at $76 million. Ryan Cos. NEW JERSEY Ranco Construction has been awarded a firm fixed-price contract by the Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Mid-Atlantic, for the construction of a landing-gear test site on a runway at Naval Air Engineering Station at Lakehurst. The Advanced Arresting Gear Test Site will accommodate equipment for load testing. Work will include site work and test-track repairs as well as construction of three pre-engineered buildings. A new turnaround space will be added to the air station’s taxiway to accommodate high-speed aircraft. Work is expected to be completed by July 2010. The contract is valued at $9.3 million. NEW YORK Skanska USA received a contract from the United Nations Development Corp. for the second phase of the renovations to the United Nations headquarters in New York City. Work will include renovation of the building’s basement and the completion of a temporary conference facility in the North Lawn Conference Building, where the U.N. General Assembly will meet during the renovations. Additional temporary office space also will be constructed during this phase of the project. Skanska was selected as construction manager for the project’s five-year capital master plan two years ago. This contract has an estimated value of $261 million, and is part of the United Nations’ overall $1-billion renovation program. Construction is being financed by contributions from United Nations member states. Completion for the entire project is currently set for 2013. UTAH The Grand County School District has selected MHTN Architects to provide architectural and engineering services for a new elementary school. The K-6 school will be located in Moab on a 13-acre site north of the existing Helen M. Knight Elementary School. The two-story, 115,000-sq-ft building will house approximately 875 students and 120 staff members. The school will include classrooms, administrative spaces, gymnasium, dining area and kitchen and a media center. Related work will include construction of a 33,000-sq-ft high school vocational-training building adjacent to the school as well as site preparation. WASHINGTON The Grant County Public Utility District has awarded a contract to Barnhard Construction Co. for the further stabilization of Wanapum Dam on the Columbia River. The contract calls for the partial infilling of 15 future unit intake bays with concrete so that they are less reliant on existing post-tension anchors for stability under normal loading conditions. Barnhard, with Schnabel Engineering and Knight Construction, will design 585 prefabricated stop logs for eventual installation in the dam’s intake bays along with 35,000 cu yd of concrete. Following a review of the stop-log design by the owner’s consultant, Hatch Acres, the fill-in of the future intake bays is expected to begin in November. WASHINGTON Fraser & Fogle Architects has been awarded a firm fixed- price, indefinite-delivery/indefinite quantity contract by the Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Northwest District, to provide general architectural and engineering services in support of architectural projects in the NAVFAC Northwest District. Work is to be performed at various Navy and Marine Corps facilities and related government facilities in the district with the vast majority of work to be located in Washington state. The wastewater treatment plant in East Providence is to undergo significant upgrades, including the installation of new odor-control systems, nitrogen-removal systems and electrical systems. New computer-monitoring systems are to be integrated into the plant’s monitoring systems. Other upgrades will be made to HVAC systems, fire-protection, and communications systems. The contract calls for the installation of 3,600 ft of 72-in.-dia gravity sewer pipe to replace existing pipes, 115 ft of 8-in. to 30-in.-dia sewer pipe, and 1,600 ft of 30-in.-dia storm sewer pipe. The sewer will be located along the banks of the James River, and will include the installation of 30,000 sq ft of steel sheet piling.
