With Arizona ranking fifth nationally in teen pregnancy rates, Primavera Foundation, Lloyd Construction and Poster Frost Mirto Inc. joined forces to create a 12-unit affordable housing community designed for grandparents taking care of grandchildren full time. The complex includes a community building, shared outdoor space, community garden and basketball court. The LEED Platinum for Homes project was built with energy efficiency as its core tenet. The community center is also the first municipally approved net-zero energy use building in the area.
The residential units have an average Home Energy Rating System score of 2.25. Four of the units scored 0 or lower, meaning they produce as much energy as they consume. Best Projects judges praised the livability of the interior, including the skillful interface of materials.
