The impressive figures provide some hope during the continuing economic downturn.

In the magazine’s Top 80 Designers list, designers with a permanent office in Illinois, Indiana, Missouri and Wisconsin are ranked by their 2009 billings.

The largest architects and engineers to make the list were AECOM of Chicago, with $149 million in regional billings; followed by HNTB Corp., Chicago, $137.1 million; CH2M HILL, Milwaukee, $95.5 million; Flad Architects, Madison, Wis., $52 million; and American Structurepoint Inc., Indianapolis, $51.1 million.

Breakout rankings by state and discipline follow the main ranking, and use data compiled from the states in the Midwest region.

To develop the ranking, Midwest Construction distributed links to its on-line survey to a database of companies identified as potential top designers.

Sources used to create the database include McGraw-Hill Construction, various economic development agencies and construction associations, and back issues of Midwest Construction.

Every effort was made to obtain accurate and complete company information and the information was verified with designers.

We would like to thank the companies, associations and individuals that assisted us in this effort.
